Innovation: UAEM’s work to prioritize the world’s greatest inequities in biomedical research.
Universities and public research institutions increase focus, investment, and support for research and development for the world’s most neglected health needs.
— UAEM International Strategic Plan
The current biomedical Research and Development (R&D) system serves profit over people. Despite the global crisis of high drug prices, R&D investments continue to focus on medicines that can be sold at high prices leaving much needed medicines undeveloped. This is failure of both the market and public policy. In the last 15 years, various R&D initiatives have appeared in response to this failure. The R&D System also often incentivizes the publication of only positive data, later used to sell medicines to consumers and health care providers. UAEM’s innovation projects aim to document public research, including on COVID-19, and to better understand and achieve transparency for biomedical research costs and results.
