Public Medicines for COVID-19
Tracking Public Investment in International COVID-19 Research and Development
Researchers around the world are racing to develop targeted COVID-19 vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Such research efforts rely heavily on public taxpayer funds. However, once these life-saving health technologies have been tested and approved, there are currently no guarantees about whether or not they will be affordable and accessible to all people. Our tracking tool aims to map where public funding and tax-payer supported R&D initiatives are taking place, in order to better support policy making that ensures that these crucial COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics are affordable to all.
This tracking tool began data collection on March 15, 2020, and was publicly released for the first time on May 18, 2020. The second iteration of the tool was released on April 14, 2021.
