Indigenous health is a Canadian public health crisis. Universities hold a pivotal position in advancing Indigenous health, but do they make the most of it? Our newly released report at Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM), the 2023 Canadian Global Health Grades, suggests that the U15 are falling short.

Canadian U15 Universities ignore access to medicines.
May 1st, 2023 — MONTRÉAL, Q.C.—Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) has published its 2023 Canadian University Report Card: Global Equity in Biomedical Research. U15 universities averaged a “D” overall. This is marginally higher than the average in the recent 2020 US UAEM University Report Card, where US institutions averaged a “D-.”

UC Berkeley Releases New Affordable Access Plan
April 25, BERKELEY, CA — The University of California, Berkeley, in partnership with Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) and the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP), has released and posted a new License agreement template that includes affordable access plan (AAP) provisions for health technologies developed by university researchers. The agreement language has been used previously by the university and is designed to require eventual licensees to create an actionable plan to ensure health technologies are accessible to people in low- and middle-income countries, and to address major inequities in communities across the United States.

Amid increasing distrust of scientific institutions, a 2021 study by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that, when it comes to public health, nearly half of Americans don’t trust institutions such as the FDA, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While this study documented low levels of public trust in governmental health organizations during the pandemic, skepticism in the time of COVID-19 was influenced by preexisting distrust of public health recommendations.
